American author Paul Bowles' book "A Hundred Camels in the Courtyard", first published in 1962, comprises four tales of contemporary life in a land where cannabis is commonly used to escape the world, rather than alcohol. In these stories, Salam uses suggestions from smoking kif to protect himself from a potential enemy. Meanwhile, the Assembly man becomes entangled in his own kif-induced dreams and begins to act them out in reality. Idir's triumph over Lahcen showcases the classic tale of the kif-smoker outsmarting the drinker. Lastly, Driss the soldier uses kif to demonstrate the existence of magic to his superior officer. For all of them, the kif-pipe serves as a means to achieve a state of communication with others and, most importantly, with themselves.
Time magazine praises Paul Bowles' work as unparalleled art at its finest.
